OOTD: My Favorite Duster

So this post isn’t going to link “shop similar here” looks. Instead, I’m going to encourage you all to think a little outside the box. My favorite duster didn’t come from any major retailer or online store — it didn’t even come in my size. It came from the Plus size section of a local thrift shop.

It originally was a 3XL, which I can assure you is not my size. But I loved the black and gold print so much that I was willing to give it a shot and take the risk.

I brought it to my seamstress who looked at my like I was insane and told her to do her best to close it up along the sides and see what she could do about the shoulders. She told me there was a huge chance that I wouldn’t look like what I wanted. That cutting  bings down the way I wanted could sometimes distort the originalsilhouette. But for the whopping $7 I paid, I was going to take the risk.

And I think it turned out great. I ended up paying more than double what I paid for the alteration. But this is something I truly love. It’s one of my favorite pieces in my closet. I’ve made it dressy, I’ve made it casual — and I’ve slayed each time if i do say so myself . And that. Brings me to the point of my post.

Sometimes, it pays to take the creative risk. It’s not all about buying premium brands or rocking ready wear. Those looks are already made. You aren’t showcasing anything original. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying that ready wear isn’t to-die-for sometimes. But looking at an item and having it altered to your liking can really pay out in the long run

So visit your local thrift stores or rummage through those disorderly sales racks. You’ll never know what you might find.
